Today, I'm going to be showing you a quick tutorial on how to import your presentations from Google Slides to Figma Slides using the Pitchdeck Figma plugin.
To get started, all we need to do is go to our Figma app, and we're just going to open up a brand new Figma design file. We're going to come back to the Figma Slides file in a moment, but first, we need to open a new Figma design file—just a regular Figma file.
What we want to do is go to the "Resources" icon and search for Pitchdeck. Under the "Plugins" tab, if you find the Pitchdeck item, just click on that. Then, you can run the Figma plugin by either clicking on this "Run" button here, or I'd recommend clicking on this little "Save" icon here. That will let you save the Figma plugin to your plugins list for easy access later.
I've already bookmarked or saved the Figma plugin, so I'm just going to go to my Figma design file canvas. Just right-click anywhere, then go down to "Plugins," then go down to "Saved plugins," and click on the Pitchdeck item. That’s going to run the Figma plugin that we saved a second ago. If you're new to the Figma plugin, the way that it works is it basically takes any Figma frames on your file and helps you turn those into presentations. For today, we're just going to be focusing on one feature of the Figma plugin, which is importing .pptx files—PowerPoint files that we're going to export from Google Slides and then import into our Figma Slides file. I'll show you how to do that now.
All you need to do is, with the Figma plugin open, go to Google Slides. First of all, export your slides as a .pptx file. You can do that by going to "File" in Google Slides, then going down to "Download," and clicking on the Microsoft PowerPoint .pptx option. Just go ahead and click on that option, and that's going to automatically download your Google Slides file to a .pptx file on your computer, which we can then import into Figma.
I've already downloaded the file to my computer, so all I'm going to do is drag and drop that file. Grab the .pptx file you just downloaded from Google Slides and drag and drop it into this little import .pptx drop zone in the Figma plugin. When you do that, it's going to automatically open up that .pptx file and import all of those slides automatically into our Figma file.
Once that finishes up, you can see here that our images, text, and slides have all been imported from Google Slides. These are all real layers that we can now interact with and edit inside of Figma. Now that we've got our Google Slides imported into Figma, what we want to do is just do one extra small step and highlight all of these frames in our Figma file. I'm just going to push Command A, or you can use Control A if you're on Windows. Once you've got all your Figma frames selected that we just imported from Google Slides, just right-click those frames and then click on the copy button.
Now, we can go back to our Figma Slides file. We're going to switch over to this Figma Slides tab and click on the "Start from scratch" option. Just go ahead and click on "Start from scratch" to add a blank slide. We're going to click on that option now, and you want to make sure that you're in list view. There’s list view and grid view in Figma Slides. To import these Google Slides into Figma Slides, we want to make sure we're on the list view panel here.
In the sidebar on the left-hand side, just right-click anywhere there, and we're going to click on paste. Click on paste, and that's going to automatically paste our Google Slide that we just imported into our Figma Slides file. You can see now that all of these slides that we just imported from Google Slides are now available inside of Figma Slides as editable layers. We can edit these text layers, move these images around, and edit them. On the right-hand side here, we can swap out images if we'd like. You can change things like overlay and things like that, and this is looking really good.
We can also see all those at once just by switching into grid view, which will automatically give you a grid view of the slides that we just imported from Google Slides into Figma Slides. You get the benefit of working in Figma Slides without having the design limitations that come with Google Slides. I’ll do a couple more examples just to show you what this looks like. We'll import two more decks. This one is a bigger slide deck in Google Slides. Again, we're just going to go to "File," then "Download," and select Microsoft PowerPoint. Once that downloads to your computer, just switch back into the Pitchdeck Figma plugin.
You can see down here in the bottom left, we have the import .pptx option that we had before, and we're just going to drag and drop that .pptx file we just saved into that little drop zone in the bottom left. That's going to automatically load up those frames again and import all of the slides from Google Slides into our Figma file. It's going to create a brand new page. You can see on the left-hand side here that each time you import a new .pptx file from Google Slides, it's going to create a new Figma page for that deck just to keep it nice and separated.
Once that finishes loading, we’ve just imported 21 slides. You can see all of those 21 slides have been imported from our Google Slides file over here into our Figma file. Once again, we're just going to select all of those frames. Go ahead and push Command A, or again, Control A if you're on Windows. We’re just going to copy those by right-clicking all those frames, clicking on copy, and we're going to open up a brand new Figma slide file just by going to the Figma menu, going to "File," and then going to "New slide deck." That’s going to open up a brand new Figma Slides file.
Once again, we're going to click on the "Start from scratch" button. Again, make sure that’s in list view. You can see the list on the side here. Just go ahead and click anywhere in that empty side panel and click on paste. Once again, that's going to import all of those Google Slides into our Figma Slides UI. Again, these are all editable layers. You can modify these in the Figma Slides UI. You can edit the copy and change the styling if you want.
So, that’s looking really good. Again, you can get an overview of all the slides we just imported from Google Slides in the Figma Slides grid view as well. That’s just a nice overview and makes it a bit easier to do things like rearrange slides or make any other additions or content changes that you want to make inside of the Figma Slides UI. I’ll do one more final example, and then we’ll finish up. Just to give you one more variant on the design, this one has some more interesting graphics and things like that, so we’ll import that one too.
Finally, we'll just do this last file from Google Slides. Again, go to "File," go down to "Download," and then select .pptx or Microsoft PowerPoint. Once that downloads to your computer, we can import that directly into our Figma plugin again. Just go down here on the left-hand side, drag and drop that exported .pptx file from Google Slides into our Figma plugin. Again, that’s going to load up all of those slides from the Google Slides export into Figma. Once that finishes loading, we’ll be able to copy those into Figma Slides.
You can see it’s just imported those 10 slides. It’s worth noting that this is currently in BETA, so you’ll notice there are very small things that might be off. You can see here in the headline on the first slide that, for some reason, it’s not getting that correct font sizing. For example, that’s one thing that you might just have to manually change in your Figma design before you copy that into Figma Slides. These should be very minor things that you may have to tweak, so just keep an eye out for that. Hopefully, it will import fairly accurately from your Google Slides designs.
Anyway, we'll just copy all of these one more time. Again, just select all of those frames, right-click, go to copy, and then again, we're going to spin up a brand new Figma Slides file. Just go to "File," then "New slide deck," and that’s going to open up a new Figma Slides file. Finally, just click on "Start from scratch" again, make sure you're in list view, and then on the side panel, just right-click anywhere, click on paste. That’s going to drop in all of those slides that we just imported from Google Slides into our Figma Slides file.
That’s basically what that looks like. You can see all of the graphics have been imported, and these are all editable layers. You can change these and move these, so you can change things like color, font styles, and content. This is all editable inside of Figma Slides. That’s basically it. I just wanted to show you a quick rundown of how to automatically import those Google Slides into Figma Slides if you don’t want to manually recreate them using the Figma Slides UI.
The Figma Slides UI is really nice to work with compared to Google Slides, but being mindful that sometimes you just have to work with designs that have already been created in Google Slides, and you want to import those into Figma Slides to have that interoperability where you can kind of go back and forth between them. That’s basically it; we’ll leave it there for today. I hope that’s helpful. If you’ve been wondering how to automatically import your Google Slides into Figma Slides, you can now do that using the Pitchdeck Figma plugin, as we’ve just seen in this video. Thank you, as always, for watching, and we'll be back with more Figma tutorials like this one very soon.
